After receiving his medical degree at age 19 he became the personnel physician to Lord Byron. He was one of the first authors to write about vampires.

"The Vampyre" is a short work of prose fiction written in 1816 by John William Polidori as part of a contest between Polidori, Mary Shelley, Lord Byron, and Percy Shelley. The same contest produced the Classic novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley.
