Jean Andre Castaigne (1860/61-1930) was a popular French painter, book illustrator and writer. He worked for many illustrated magazines that were popular at the time like The Century, Scribneras, and Harpers. He illustrated many books including: F. Marion Crawfordas Casa Braccio (1895), S. Weir Mitchellas The Adventures of FranA ois (1898), Harold MacGrathas The Goose Girl (1909), Hallie Erminie Rivesa The Valiants of Virginia (1912), and was the first to illustrate Gaston Lerouxas The Phantom of the Opera (1910). Castaigne also wrote a number of books which he illustrated himself such as: Fata Morgana: A Romance of Art Student Life in Paris (1904) and The Bill-Toppers (1909). Google Books
